So Good They Named It Twice – New York City Child Photography

I am writing this blog post still groggy from jet lag but I was so impatient to start editing the images from this session (apologies for grammatical or spelling errors – think I need another little sleep). For the last 3 weeks I have been touring the States – New England to be precise. Let’s call it a late honeymoon shall we but above all it was great to get away and experience something new.

We started in New York City. It was HOT. I can not begin to covey to you how very hot it was. We walked (lots) and saw the sites but a highlight for me was the fact that I was going to get the opportunity to photograph a beautiful 12 year old girl in this stunning city. Enough to make any child photographer a little giddy!

We met in Dumbo in Brooklyn. The streets were bustling with tourists (and tons of photographers!) enjoying the early evening sun. As the light changed during the evening each location seemed to naturally find it’s own feel and style. For our first location it seemed to call for a vintage film treatment in post production.

The light was magical. Tricky but magical.

We wandered through the streets whilst having a good old chat about the differences between the UK and the US (apparently my accent is awesome – who’d have thought?). These quiet side streets were a great start to get into the session but we soon headed into the main streets by the river and the feel changed.

A quick stop for a milkshake from Shake Shack (best shakes in the world!) and we headed towards the Brooklyn Bridge as the sun was setting. When you work on location as a photographer you look for light all of the time. You learn to anticipate the conditions and start to think about how the images will look and what you need to do to get the feel you want. You have to think on your toes. It has to look effortless as you can’t break that connection with your little model. I was SO trying to mask my excitement. The light was perfect. The location iconic.

We were hot and tired but there was just a little time to grab a few more shots before the guys cycled home, we parted company and I treated myself to a cocktail as big as my head.

The light was gone. I was totally spent. We said our goodbyes and I walked home. It was quite some walk I can tell you!

A bit of a wobbly iPhone capture!

I can not thank my wonderful little model and her mum enough for spending this time with me. They were both totally fantastic to work with and they will be receiving a nice little gift of images and some other British treats (I haven’t forgotten!) as a HUGE thank you.

That’s a pretty big bucket list item done and dusted. One big fat huge awesome tick!
